Humor and Physical Health
Reduction of Stress Hormones - Laughter reduces at least four of the neuroendocrine hormones associated with stress response. These are epinephrine, cortisol, dopac, and growth hormone.
Immune System Enhancement - Clinical studies have shown that humor strengthens the immune system. See below.
Pain Reduction - Laughter increases the level of our natural pain killers - endorphins
Cardiac Exercise - A belly laugh is equivalent to "an internal jogging." Laughter can provide good cardiac conditioning especially for those who are unable to perform physical exercises.
Blood Pressure - Laughter temporarily lowers blood pressure.
Respiration - Frequent belly laughter empties your lungs of more air than it takes in resulting in a cleansing effect similar to deep breathing. This can be especially beneficial for patients who are suffering from emphysema and other respiratory ailments.

Benefits of Laughter
Therapeutic Benefits of Laughter
Dr. Lee Berk and fellow researcher Dr. Stanley Tan of Loma Linda University in California have been studying the effects of laughter on the immune system. To date their published studies have shown that laughing lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, increases muscle flexion, and boosts immune function by raising levels of infection-fighting T-cells, disease-fighting proteins called Gamma-interferon and B-cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies. Laughter also triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, and produces a general sense of well-being.
Following is a summary of their research, taken from an interview published in the September/October 1996 issue of the Humor and Health Journal.
Laughter is good for us in every way as several studies have shown. Among these findings:
* Laughter stimulates physical healing.
In Berk's study, the physiological response produced by belly laughter was opposite that seen in classical stress, supporting the conclusion that mirthful laughter is a eustress state -- a state that produces healthy or positive emotions.
Research results indicate that, after exposure to humor, there is a general increase in activity within the immune system, including:
Our immune system plays a most important role in keeping good health and keeping away infections, allergies and cancers. It has been proved by psychoneuroimmunologists that all negative emotions like anxiety, depression or anger weaken the immune system of the body, thereby reducing its fighting capacity against infections.
Laughter helps to increase the count of natural killer cells (NK cells - a type of white cell) and also raises the antibody levels. Researchers have found that after laughter therapy there is an increase in antibodies (Immunoglobulin A) in the mucous of the nose and respiratory passages, which is believed to have protective capacity against some viruses, bacteria and other micro organisms.
Many members of Laughter Clubs say they have noticed that the frequency of common colds, sore throats and chest infections has decreased. The effect of laughter on our immune system is considered to be very significant in regard to deadly diseases like AIDS and cancer.
The results of the study also supported research indicating a general decrease in stress hormones that constrict blood vessels and suppress immune activity. These were shown to decrease in the study group exposed to humor.
Levels of epinephrine were lower in the group both in anticipation of humor and after exposure to humor. Epinephrine levels remained down throughout the experiment.
In addition, dopamine levels (as measured by dopac) were also decreased. Dopamine is involved in the "fight or flight response" and is associated with elevated blood pressure.
Laughing is aerobic, providing a workout for the diaphragm and increasing the body's ability to use oxygen.
Laughter brings in positive emotions that can enhance – not replace -- conventional treatments. Hence it is another tool available to help fight disease.
Herbert Lefcourt, a noted psychologist from the University of Waterloo in Canada has explored the possibility that a sense of humor and its use can change our emotional response to stress. In this study, subjects were asked to review the frequency and severity of stressful life changes occurring to them over the previous six months, and their recent negative mood disturbances were evaluated. Lefcourt then administered tests to evaluate use of humor, perception of humor, appreciation of laughter, and efforts to include opportunities for humor and laughter into each subjects lifestyle. Results of this study have shown that the ability to sense and appreciate humor can buffer the mood disturbances which occur in response to negative life events.
Laughter is one of the finest, most economical and easy to practice anti-stress measures. Laughter is one of the best muscle relaxants. Laughter expands blood vessels and sends more blood rising to the extremities and other muscles all over the body. A good bout of laughter also reduces the levels of stress hormones epineprine and cortisol. It can be said to be a form of dynamic meditation or relaxation.
Laughter as a Pain
Experts believe that when used as an adjunct to conventional care, laughter can reduce pain and aid the healing process. For one thing, laughter offers a powerful distraction from pain.
In a study published in the Journal of Holistic Nursing, patients were told one-liners after surgery and before painful medication was administered. Those exposed to humor perceived less pain when compared to patients who didn't get a dose of humor as part of their therapy.
Laughter increases the levels of endorphins in our bodies, which are natural pain killers. Norman Cousins, an American journalist who was suffering from ankylosing spondylitis, an incurable and excruciatingly painful disease of the spine, was benefited with laughter when no painkiller could help him. He discovered that fifteen minutes of belly laughing would allow him to sleep pain-free and drug-free for two hours.
Endorphins released as a result of laughter may help in reducing the intensity of pain in those suffering from arthritis, spondylitis and muscular spasms of the body. Many women have reported a reduced frequency of migraine and tension headaches.
Perhaps the biggest benefit of laughter is that it is free and has no known negative side effects.
Humor perception involves the whole brain and serves to integrate and balance activity in both hemispheres. Derks, at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, has shown that there is a unique pattern of brain wave activity during the perception of humor. EEG's were recorded on subjects while they were presented with humorous material.
During the setup to the joke, the cortex's left hemisphere began its analytical function of processing words. Shortly afterward, most of the brain activity moved to the frontal lobe which is the center of emotion. Moments later the right hemisphere's synthesis capabilities joined with the left's processing to find the pattern -- to 'get the joke'. A few milliseconds later, before the subject had enough time to laugh, the increased brain wave activity spread to the sensory processing areas of the brain, the occipital lobe. The increased fluctuations in delta waves reached a crescendo of activity and crested as the brain 'got' the joke and the external expression of laughter began. Derks' findings shows that humor pulls the various parts of the brain together rather than activating a component in only one area.
The emotions and moods we experience directly affect our immune system. A sense of humor allows us to perceive and appreciate the incongruities of life and provides moments of joy and delight. These positive emotions can create neurochemical changes that will buffer the immunosuppressive effects of diseases and stress.
The one benefit almost everybody derives is a sense of well-being. After 15 minutes of laughter in the morning, you will feel fresh throughout the day. There is no medicine like laughter, which gives such an instant result. The reason for the sense of well being is that you inhale more oxygen while laughing. Laughter can be compared to any aerobic exercises except you don't have to wear fancy shoes or clothes. You don't need to sweat hard on the jogging tracks. According to Dr. William Fry from Stanford University, one minute of laughter is equal to 10 minutes on a rowing machine. In other words, laughter stimulates heart and blood circulation, equivalent to any other standard aerobic exercise. Laughter exercise is suited for sedentary people and those who are confined to bed or wheel chair.
Since breathing capacity is one of the factors which determines stamina in sports, laughter before any competitive sports activity will increase the relaxation levels and hence, performance. Laughter can be beneficially introduced as a regular exercise in any kind of sports activity.
There are plenty of exercises available for your body muscles, but laughing provides a good massage to all internal organs. It enhances their blood supply and increases their efficiency. It has been compared to magic fingers, which reach into the interior of the abdomen and massage your organs. It improves the blood supply and helps the bowels to move properly.
The stress and strain of modern life take a heavy toll on the human mind and body. Mind-related diseases like anxiety, depression, nervous breakdowns and sleeplessness are on the rise. Laughter has benefited many people who were on high doses of anti - depressants and tranquillizers. Now they are getting better sleep and their depression has reduced. People with suicidal tendencies have started living with more hope.

There are a number of conditions thought to contribute to high blood pressure and heart disease such as heredity, obesity, smoking and excessive intake of saturated fats. Stress, however, is known to be one of the major factors in both heart disease and high blood pressure. Laughter helps to control blood pressure by reducing the release of stress related hormones and bringing relaxation.
Experiments have shown that there is a drop of 10-20 mm. pressure after laughing for 10 minutes. This does not mean that those who are taking blood pressure medication everyday will be completely cured. But you may realize, after a period of time, that you need less medicine to control your condition. It may be possible to gradually reduce the amount of medicine you take. Of course, please consult with your health care professional before reducing any meds on your own. It takes years to develop high blood pressure and it will not be reversed in a few days or a month. But laughter can bring positive improvement.
Similarly, if you are at high risk of developing heart disease, laughter can be a preventive medicine. Those who are suffering from heart disease and have stabilized on medication will find that laughter improves the blood circulation and oxygen supply to the heart muscles. Due to improvement of blood circulation there is less chance of clots forming. Those who have had heart attacks or have undergone bypass surgery can also participate in laughter therapy.
Laughter is one of the best exercises for those suffering from asthma and bronchitis. It improves the lung capacity and oxygen levels in the blood. Doctors recommend chest physiotherapy to bring out mucous (phlegm) from the respiratory passages. Blowing forcefully into an instrument and blowing balloons is one of the common exercises given to asthmatics. Laughter does the same job, more easily and almost free of cost. Individuals suffering from asthma and bronchitis who laugh frequently have reported a reduced frequency of their attacks. Laughter therapy may cause some discomfort if you have severe bronchiospasm. There are a small percentage of asthma cases who may get a little aggravation by doing any exercise (exercise induced asthma). Such individuals should consult their doctors before taking up laughter therapy.
Infection is one of the most common causes of frequent asthma attacks. Laughter increases the antibody levels in the mucous membranes of the respiratory passages, thereby reducing the frequency of chest infections. It also tones up the normal mucous clearing system of the bronchial tubes. Stress is another factor which can bring on an attack of asthma. By reducing stress, laughter can improve the prognosis of the disease.
Laughter can be very beneficial for singers and actors. Increased lung capacity and exercise of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles will help to gain better control over speech. Another benefit is enhanced self-confidence and reduced stage fright due to an increase in the body’s relaxation level which results from laughter.
Laughter is one of the finest, most economical and easy to practice anti-stress measures, and laughter is one of the best muscle relaxants. Laughter expands blood vessels and sends more blood rising to the extremities and other muscles all over the body.
It can be compared to any form of relaxation and meditation, so it can be considered a form of dynamic meditation or relaxation. For meditation, one has to put in a concerted effort to completely detach oneself, on mental and emotional levels, from one’s own feelings and thought processes, as well as from the physical world to prevent distractions. On the other hand, while laughing, we do not have any conscious thought process and all our senses naturally and effortlessly combine in a moment of harmony, to give joy, peace and relaxation. While laughing you cannot think of anything else. Either you think or you laugh, but not both.
In other types of meditation you need to concentrate a lot to take your mind away from distracting thoughts, which is easier said than done. Therefore, laughter is the easiest form of meditation which brings you instant relaxation.
Makes You Look Younger
People do exercise for all the muscles of the body, but there are no regular exercises designed for facial muscles except in yoga. Laughter is an excellent exercise for your facial muscles. It tones up the muscles of the face and improves facial expressions. When you laugh, your face becomes red due to an increase in blood supply, which nourishes and cleanses the facial skin and makes it glow. Laughing people look more cheerful and attractive. By squeezing the tear glands through laughter, it moistens the eyes adding a little sparkle to them. Laughter exercises the abdominal muscles and helps to improve muscle tone of those with pot bellies.
Self Confidence Through Laughter
Sense of Well Being
The one benefit everybody gets from laughter is a sense of well being. After 15 minutes of laughter in the morning, you will feel fresh throughout the day.
There is no medicine like laughter. Laughter gives instant results You start feeling the freshness straightaway. Many people have found that they don't get irritated over small little things after starting this therapy. Their approach towards life changes. It becomes more peaceful, more tolerant and more mellow.
Humor Helps You Cope
Humor provides a sense of control over the stress that goes along with battling cancer by giving you more control over your daily mood. It helps you sustain an upbeat, optimistic frame of mind, even on the bad days. This more positive emotional state helps give you the resilience you need to cope with the next problem thrown your way. A good belly laugh also boosts your energy level on the days when you don't want to even get out of bed. This is especially important, since most survivors experience fatigue as a result of their cancer treatment. Finally, humor and laughter provide a means of "letting go" of the anger and anxiety that build up on your worst days.
Laughter also reduces muscle tension. This muscle relaxation, and the easing of psychological tension that accompanies it, is the main goal of all stress management techniques, and clearly accounts for much of the stress-reducing power of humor.
Most people on a spiritual path seem to think that to be spiritual means to have no pain or at least to deny pain, yet laughter comes out of pain and pain is okay to have.
They apparently forget that Jesus wept and sometimes raged. He lost his temper with the money changers and went after them with a whip. I can't believe he also didn't laugh, despite the fact that in Western religion, laughter is a no-no. Playboy received more irate mail after running a picture of Jesus laughing than they ever got for any other picture. That's really amazing when you consider the content of that magazine. How could Jesus laughing be more threatening than any picture they had ever run ? Yet apparently it was.
Our ideas are surely a long way from Eastern philosophies where there are things like the laughing Buddha; the wry Sufi stories; the Hindus, who think the universe was created in play; or Zen Buddhists, who believe that if you laugh for ten minutes upon waking, you've achieved the equivalent of six to eight hours of rigorous meditation.
There's a tremendous resistance in the Western spiritual movement today to acknowledging pain, because many people have become intensely interested in spiritual matters just to avoid such acknowledgement. In those cases, religion is like a drug. But pain is lifesaving feedback sensation which tells us when we need to pay attention to something potentially destructive. It is a natural part of being human. Many people think that because they've become involved with spirituality, they shouldn't ever feel pain again. Then they do feel pain, they fear they're doing something wrong and they wind up not only with pain but with guilt as well. This fear of 'doing it wrong' is the very opposite of the spirituality they're trying to achieve. So they become trapped in fear, afraid to laugh, when ironically laughter is the one thing that will release them from the fear. There is a saying that if fear is the lock, laughter is the key.
Also, the fear, pain, and guilt create feelings of isolation and separation, when the reality is that we are all One and separation is an illusion. The tragedy is, we don't always experience that. The key, once again, is laughter. When we laugh together, we actually experience connection. So, for me, that's what spirituality is all about - being present together, experiencing the here-and-now together, and moving together in a shared catharsis.
Questions and Answers on Laughing When We Hurt
Excerpt from an interview with Annette Goodheart in Science of Mind Magazine
Science of Mind
Laughter, on the other hand, is universal. It's a profound process that involves every major system in the body. It's spiritual, physiological, and emotional. It's not intellectual, except perhaps - with adults - after the fact. Think of the kind of laughter babies do. When we see a baby laughing, nobody says, 'Doesn't that baby have a wonderful sense of humor?'
Most people think our sense of humor is what causes us to laugh, but it's really the other way around. And we would have more opportunities to laugh if we didn't think we have to agree on what's funny. Laughter doesn't need a reason to be - in fact, laughter is unreasonable, illogical, and irrational. Laughter exists for its own sake. Infants provide a good example of this, because they learn to laugh first and later on develop a sense of humor, which is a playfully intellectual way of relating to the world.

Laughter is inner jogging.
We know that four-year-olds
